Upon arrival, we’ll complete the facility’s required security procedures. The detention facility will make the individual available for the notarization according to its procedures and operational schedule.

3. Meet with the Individual and Complete the Notarization

Individual is brought down to meet with the notary, identity is verified and notarization is completed in accordance with California law.

4. Documents Returned

Documents are returned to you or handled according to your instructions.

Every detention facility has its own procedures, and jail notarizations often involve questions that don’t come up during a typical notary appointment. What information do I need to schedule a jail notarization?

To schedule a jail notarization, please have the individual’s full name, booking number, detention facility, and the documents requiring notarization. We’ll also need the name and contact information for the person coordinating the appointment. At the Los Angeles County detention facilities we regularly serve, the booking number is used to verify the individual’s identity and is matched to the identification wristband during the notarization process.

How long does a jail notarization take?

The time varies based on how long it takes the facility to bring the indivudal down for the signing and the number of documents involved. It can generally take between 30 – 90 minutes.

Do you offer same-day or emergency appointments?

If the appointment is scheduled with us early enough in the day and we have availability, we can handle same-day or emergency appointments. Detention facilities have specific hours available for professional visits, so we must remain within those parameters.

Can family members attend the signing?

Family members are welcome to come meet us at the facility; however, they might not be able to witness the actual signing of the document(s).

Can you notarize estate planning documents for someone who is incarcerated?

Yes! We regularly notarize powers of attorney, trust documents, deeds, and other estate planning documents for individuals in custody, as well as vehicle title transfers, child passport forms, and other documents requiring notarization.

Will you explain the documents to the signer?

No. I am not an attorney, so cannot explain the documents to the signer. The documents should be explained to the individual by an attorney or by the person scheduling the appointment or by someone they designate who is able to properly explain the dcouments.

What happens if the individual refuses to sign?

If the individual refuses to sign, the notarization cannot be completed. Because travel and appointment time have already been reserved, the applicable cancellation/travel fee will still apply.

What if my loved one is being transferred soon?

Please let us know if the individual is being transferred so that we may ensure that the appointment is scheduled prior to that date.

Will the notarization happen immediately when you arrive?

No. The facilities don’t have a specific timeframe to bring the individual out. It sometimes depends on the availability of deputies at the time of the appointment and if the individual is available at the time we arrive. They may be working, eating or involved in some other activity.
